I have a lot of scraps of batting from all different projects and all that I want to use to make a microwave bowl mitt. My question is this: Is there a way to tell if the batting is cotton or not when there is no info available about it? I am scared to create a mess in the microwave if the wrong stuff is used so if it is impossible to be sure, I will not use any of it in this project!!! Thanks for any help :)

Most of the cotton batting I've come across if you pull it apart its kind of crumbly. Well at least the cheap kind is. They use cotton combings which is shorter fibers that they don't use for making thread/cloth

I did the burn test and then tested a scrap in the microwave.
If it burns kinda like paper and is ashy it is ok. If there is a hard, plastic ridge and kind of melts rather and burn then don't use it. 100% cotton is all that should be used in the microwave. My rule is if in doubt don't use it.

Thanks for the info. I may try a burn test tomorrow but I may use it for something else :)
