    Default Quilting with templates

I want to learn to FMQ and just saw some quilting templates on sale. I must admit I am not really sure how they work but I believe you mark your quilt then stitch following the markings. I am wondering if anyone has had any success quilting with this method?

    Thank You.

Yes, i am doing that right now on a quilt. It is not as easy as it looks. I would not buy a stencil less that 6 " square. i bought some that are too little.

There are many ways to mark a quilt for quilting. Golden Thread paper can be stitched through as well as tissue paper. I like to mark a few guidelines with white school chalk. A site that has many FMQ design ideas is Lori Kennedy's site www.theinboxjaunt.com/ under the Tuesday Tutorial tab.

I used stencils on my tan and white dresden plate. I used a regular pencil to mark it lightly(after I gave up on the marking pencil from the fabric store)

I did QAYG and just fllowed the lines with my DSM. I did not FMQ.

I love using stencils... they can be challenging but I don't think I could FMQ without them. I use chalk or the washable markers to mark the quilt. The stencils help me be consistent and I could never free hand some of these things

for doing FMQ with stencil designs, look for continuous stencil designs. no breaks to stop and start that way.

Templates and stencils are completely different.....templates are used to trace around the shape and cut out fabric to stitch together a pattern. Stencils are usually used to trace the design onto your quilt top and then hand or machine quilt on. Are you actually asking about templates or stencils?

I use school washable markers for quilting designs. they wash out nicely and come in many colors.

Thank you everyone for the great responses. I did use the wrong term - it should be quilting stencils. But I have learned a lot from your feedback and its much appreciated. Just curious if you are using stencils to mark your quilt are you quilting on a sewing machine or quilt frame?

I love using stencils. Usually I use the powder white chalk. Never found it to be a problem following a design. I think it looks more pretty than just plain stippling. But it depends mostly on what is the best way to quilt the top. I have been quilting on my Bernina 1530 since the 90s with a 7" throat.
