What's proper. You make what you feel and enjoy. There are no rules for thread artists.

One of the first things I learned from this Board is that there are no rules in quilting. Make the quilts you want to make. Ones that you like or challenge you or you just want to try it. Sweetly thank your SIL, then do what you want.

Oh phooey, forget you ever heard the word "rules." It's your house, your fabric, your time so make whatever you want and display it anywhere you want. I guess at some point in my life that might have mattered to me, but no way does it now. The first thing I thought about when I read your post was that I grew up in a house of six children. You can guess how much we had that matched. And I have wonderful memories of being surrounded by unmatched things.

I can relate to your SIL's thoughts. For lots of years I worried about ....or at least considered matching things. Then I took a quilt class or two and discovered that the loveliest quilts that I saw didn't "match" my house and I would never get to make anything fun or colorful if I worried about matching colors. So I also get that from relatives that things don't match but I'm having so much fun playing with colors that I would never have bought in the past. Just have fun...we don't live forever!!

Homes are supposed to have a color scheme???

I'm curious (and a bit paranoid),

Who made your SIL the Quilt Police? Tell her you're gonna make her one just like it for her B'day or next Christmas. Bet that would shut her up! I noticed your Avatar is an antique picture of a lady sewing. Tell her you're having a mid-life crisis & from now on, it's anything goes. I can get really, really cynical when I get ticked off, so you do your own thing. Can you post a Picture of your colorful topper? We sewers/quilters just love pics of everyone's work.

Quilts are to be something for happiness and you should make them whatever colour makes you happy at the moment. Make something in complimentary colours to your house decor for some real snap!
