    Default Soapstone stick for marking?

    Hi all,
I have a soapstone stick - the type maintenance people use for marking on metal. I was wondering if anyone here can offer some opinions and experiences with using this for marking on dark fabric.
    It is about 1/2 " x 5" .
I intend to test it on scraps but wanted to know if anyone has used this type of product and with what success?
My search only revealed one reference to soapstone and it was about sharpening it.

I tried it once but I didn't like the final results. Never hurts to give it a try. What may not work for one quilter may just be perfect for another. Good luck.

I have a soapstone marker that I used to use since it is made for just that purpose and it worked ok I guess, but it was constantly needing to be sharpened. As soon as you use it the tip flattens out and I like a nice thin line. On dark fabric I use a fine white marking pen by Clover. The marks iron right out (or steam so the iron doesn't have to touch the fabric). It takes a few seconds for the marks to appear when you first mark with it, but after that the stay until you heat them to remove. I like it the best of anything else I've tried. There's a thread on here today about using chalk though and I'm interested in checking that out because with chalk you can see what you mark right away.

I have a soapstone marker that is made specifically for quilting. Never liked it, however. Did not mark clearly enough to suit me. No harm in trying it out (except, in my case, the pocketbook ).
