Default To steam or not to steam?

Is steam ironing better for quilting than dry ironing? I use steam because Gail Kessler recommended in her class, I also use starch. I've noticed several people on the board talk of dry ironing. Is one really better than the other or is it just what people are used to?

Absolutely, I couldn't live without my steam. About the only time that I use a dry iron is when ironing on freezer paper. I love steam and I love Mary Ellen's starch.

I love steam also. I can't get my iron hot enough without it.

It is entirely your preference. I don't use stream very often but I do keep my squirt bottle handy.

I use starch and my spray bottle frequently. You just have to be careful not to stretch the block when using steam.

My iron is dry because I stopped putting water in it when it developed a leak, but I do use a spray bottle with starch as needed.

I use starch and steam as well. Don't usually have a stretching issue. It does make some of those peskier blocks behave better when given a good shot of steam.
