I just wanted to drop a line to say a big THANK YOU to everyone here. I have always been a quilter - for years off and on. But never took things serious... always borrowed my sister's machine and hand pieced and hand quilted while I watched TV. This spring when we lost my nephew in a horrible accident I was inspired to make memory quilts with his clothes. I had no idea what I was getting into - if I had known I probably would have kept my mouth shut. But having this great group here to ask questions and encourage me I finished the memory quilts this weekend - - all 7 are now complete!! I never could have done this on my own... from interfacing, to binding.... and yes even to buying my own sewing machine. So thank you everyone. Now I just have to decide if I want to give her the quilts now or save them for a Christmas gift (the brother of the nephew that was killed will be home from the Marines at Christmas time, so it would be nice to share with him)

I think it was great that you did this kind act. I was very fortunate to also be asked to make memory quilt (S) from scrubs that our niece had, She had retired and put them away, just in case she decided to go back to work. She had died unexpectedly. I had made 5 of the quilts with scrub fabric left over. I don't live in the same part of the country and didn't want to risk loosing them through the delivery service, so my husband and I trekked across country to deliver them to the husband. We had talked to his brother to have him over for dinner. Then after dinner the table was cleared and all the quilts were laid out on the table so they could be viewed by all present. The niece has 2 children by a previous marriage, but just wanted to present the quilts to the husband, then he could do want he wants when he is ready. He uses the quilts on a rotating basis. The step daughter was show the quilts and she has requested a quilt made from a particular scrub fabric. When I started the quilts I also started a little history of the scrubs and titled it, "The Journey of the Scrubs". As I make other quilts from the scrubs, I will include pictures of the previous quilts, as well as, a copy of "The Journey of the Scrubs" with the additional information for the new quilt. In the story, I described how and why I decided on a particular pattern or a particular choice of background fabric. I have many more quilts to make as there were 18 all cotton scrub tops and many more mixed blend scrubs, tops and bottoms. Happy Quilting!!!
