I have two spools of thread with the brand name of "Ultra special Quilting Thread" (TM). According to the label it is cotton covered polyester and it is for both hand and machine quilting. I can not find out where this thread is sold or if it is even being manufactured at this time. I have had these spools for a number of years (10+) and I have no idea where I purchased them. The label on the spool states the thread is/was distributed by Tootal American in Stamford, CT. Does anyone have any info re this thread. Thank you. Francine

I saw the reference to 10+ year old spools of thread and want to know how long should you keep and use thread? Common sence tell me it lasts a long time when used in piecing a quilt but does it last foreven just setting on a thread rack? Just wondering.

Threads do have a 'shelf life', especially cotton, and especially when stored on open thread racks where they are exposed to light, heat, dust, etc. That's why "spool cabinets" were invited in the first place. Most of us don't use miles of thread a day that would keep our stock used up quickly.

she noted that the thread is cotton covered polyester and i know polyester lasts forever (there are still some 70's leisure suits around) so maybe the thread has not been affected. i am currently quilting with thread from my clothes sewing days some 15+ years ago and it is fine, with no breakage or weakness. of course my thread was carefully stored away from the elements though.

good luck with finding the vendor though. i know some thread manufacturers have closed up shop in the united states and a lot of thread is imported in.

I've used cotton thread that's more than 10 yrs old - seems fine
