Walnut shells for pincushions

I know several people who have used the pet bedding. My friend sells hers at craft fairs. The only thing with walnut shells is a lot of people have nut allergies. . My DD could go into anaphylactic shot from using it. Just make sure you warn people. I would put a warning label on them that they contain nuts.

I bought crushed walnut shells at a nearby chain pet store. They are in the reptile supplies area, used for pet bedding. It was a much larger bag than I needed, but it didn't cost much at all. I had not heard about washing it, but I don't see why you would. Some people are concerned about those with nut allergies receiving a pin cushion filled with walnut shells. If I were making pin cushions to sell or give to a large group of people, I would just make people aware that they contains nuts products. The shells make a really nice pin cushion filler.
I did did the same and it works fine.

I use coarse silica sand, which you can purchase online from Amazon for approx $6.00 - made the small bag to hold the sand using batiks, as the thread count is much higher, and never had a problem with any residue.....coarse silica is also known as glass beads and keeps your pins sharp.

Please make sure your recipients know that there is walnut shell in the pincushions. My daughter has a deadly nut allergy and after these became so popular, I had to stop doing swaps and now will not buy from shops that sell the shells because of the very real risk of cross contamination. I also started pre washing everything and quit buying precuts.

Shop around for these walnut shells....I priced them at the large chain pet shop and they were expensive...then I went to the local pet shop and they were 1/4 of the price....and I did make a little bag for inside of the pincushion...I did the large pincushion with the thread bag attached.
