I am making a large California King sized quilt for a friend. If I use the Warm & Natural that I use for most of my smaller quilts, it will be quite heavy. It will be hand quilted, so what would be a better batting to use that would not be as heavy as the W & N? Most of the books I have looked in do not make weight comparisons of the various brands. What do you quilters recommend for this?

Just FYI - Quilter's Dream has many different types, cotton to wool and in between, Warm and Natural is a different brand.

If you want 100% cotton, I would Recommend Quilte's Dream REQUEST. It's their lightest and great for hand quilting.

I love Hobbs 80/20. Feels and behaves just like 100% cotton, but it's much lighter.

So you are planning to hand quilt a California king??? Wow. Big project.

Hobbs or Dream Wool! They both are Fabulous to work with, needle like butter, are lightweight and lofty. Wash up beautifully in a finished quilt. Make wonderful heirloom quality quilts. My go to choice for every special quilt.

I would go with Hobbs wool (not the legacy wool; the regular wool). Wool batting is described as like quilting through butter; much, much easier to hand quilt than cotton, plus gives better definition to your stitches and is lighter in weight than cotton. Quilter's Dream wool is also very good for the same reasons. I have seen negative comments about the Legacy wool so would stay away from that.

Hobbs 80/20 is also an option. Easier to hand quilt than W&N, lighter in weight, and very nice loft.

Wool, definitely! Both Hobbs and Quilters Dream make a lovely wool batting.

Another vote for Quilter's Dream. I made a king for my bed and used QD wool. It's light, warm, and has a very lovely drape. <3
