I would say the larger seam allowance is a good idea--I've resewn a number of seams in my GS quilt because they had frayed out. Since the unhappy earlier experiences, I NOW use 1/2 seams and simple designs with relatively large pieces. I also work with new fabric, unwashed.
I have list of acronyms from previous posts and GS is not on it. What is GS?

I would buy good thick flannel from a LQS. I have found flannel from Hancock, Joanne's and Walmart not so good.

I made a flannel blankie for DH and used wider seams and flannel for the batting also.

    I agree totally!

That sounds like great advise - Thanks

Don't prewash unless you are not making a rag quilt. It needs to rag- I made a non-rag quilt and used my serger to sew it. It not only sewed it together but bound the edges so it didn't unravel in the wash. Other than that, I never pre-wash my fabrics.

Yes to the prewash! Either serge or zigzag your edges before washing and you will not have a mess in the washer. This is a good habit to get into with all of your fabrics. As someone else already suggested buy good quality flannel. SewBatiks has flannel Batiks if hubby likes those, plus they carry 108 inch wide flannel for backings.

    ElizH,
Where in Western NC do you live? I live in Alexander in NW Buncombe County. I seldom respond to anything, but I read the forum daily.
