Any chalk will mark just fine. Artist soft pastels sold in any artist supply store or section come in multiple colors and can be made into a point very easily for fine lines. They will either brush off or wipe off with a damp cloth. The cost is almost nothing compared to marking pens.

I made a 3-D pinwheel for my grandaugther. I SID first and then quilted around the outer edges of each pinwheel and now I want to do something inside of the sashing. I'm not sure what yet but since it's for a baby I want it to hold up under all the washing it'll bet. You should mark your quilt before you sandwich it. I use Fons and Porters pencils; they work great. A sliver of bar soap also works well
