I just finished a quilt having about 3 inches all around. While basting I came up short on on end about 8 inches so I just zig-zagged some batting to it and then proceeded.
When I send mine out my longarmer requests 4 inches so that's what I do.
I use those scraps left over for practice. I find that when I do a bit on a scrap sandwich before starting I end up doing a better job.
I'm still improving and hope to get better. Machine quilting hasn't been easy for me. I'm used to hand quilting.
