I have been asked to make a denim quilt, I cut the jeans, and it will be about 60" square.

Flannel backed. I will do QAYG for the rows, then each section (9 sections, for easy handing), will do Cotton Theory and pull the back flannel fabric to the front.

I want a little pow to it, so will do a few pinwheels with the flannel and denim.

I told the customer $90 total, that is $1 per inch.

What do you think? Did I overcharge, am I cheating myself, or was that about right?

Thanks. She caught me off guard, so I hadn't had time to think about it. She was happy with that amount, and has told me I can do whatever I want. She just wants something to cover up with while watching TV.

Does that include the cost of the fabric or is she paying for that ?

Sounds o.k. to me. Are you asking for a deposit?

Oops - she is supplying the jeans, and I will buy the flannel (catching today's sales at JoAnns or Hancocks), think I will need 6 yards. They are $2.99 yard today, do that will be less than $20 after tax.

If the sale flannel doesn't seem right, I can go more expensive, then do less pinwheels so I don't need as much fabric.

So, I guess my "wage" is $70, if I spend $20 on flannel.

She gave me $30. I told her it was a good time to buy flannel becuase of President's Day sale, so it was easy to get the deposit.

Also, she is in no hurry. But I am, I want to get it done in the next couple months, so I can use my "wage" to buy more fabrics and get some wedding gifts done by September.

Sounds fair...Just pick an easy pattern and you will have it done in a day.

Is she cutting down the jeans? That can be time consuming.

Do you think you can get it made in 7 hours or so? That would make your hourly pay $10 / hour. You'll have to decide what your time is worth.

IF you don't want to get roped into making more similar projects at the same rate, let her know that this is a special for her since she's a friend -- not your usual rate.

I think it sounds fair. We are never paid what it is actually worth but a sale is a sale if you don't mind the extra work.

You should have her over when you make it and have her cut the pieces. She may want to pay you more when she sees what it takes to make a quilt.
