I pin everything when I sew. I was a dress maker long before I was a quilter. I have learned...pin more...rip out less.... I don't like the ruffle borders on my quilts. Also as a long arm quilter as well, a ruffle border is harder to quilt and get it to look good because of the extra fabric in the borders.

This is why you pin. My first ever quilt, lined up the way you do. Glad you've been luckier than me, but a valuable lesson - I always measure and pin now.

Pinning your borders helps a longarm quilter if you are sending out to be quilted. Sometimes a wavy border is a nightmare and the quilter does not understand why the quilt does not lay flat. If you are not concerned about it. Do your thing. It is all a matter of preference. I also use Bonnie Hunters border method, works for me every time.

I take classes (my fourth year) at a tech school, taught by a quilting expert. I attend the class weekly. She taught me to measure the side borders first, laying them side by side on the quilt top at the middle, then cut. Then, she had me fold each quilt edge in half, mark with a pin, then fold in quarters and mark with a pin. I then so the same with the border - and match the half mark and quarter mark pins, pinning those spots. If there is any easing to be done, especially with a bias edge, you can do it as you add more pins. I have used this method for the last 4 years with no wavy borders. It makes sense that the border fits the quilt, not the other way around.
