I have a lot of yardage material. Is is better to cut manterial in yards or fat quaters more so that working with the long yardage of material.

That depends on the kind of quilts you plan to make. If you plan to make a lot of scrap quilts or FQ/charm square quilts, it would be fine. When I am working on a quilt that uses a bit of yardage, sometimes I will cut it into smaller pieces to make it easier to handle, like 1 or 1-1/2 yard. But if I want to use that fabric for borders, I will often cut lengthwise border strips, then cut my smaller pieces out of the rest.

I would never cut yardage into smaller sizes until I need them. I like to put borders on my quilts and it's best if the border is one piece on each side. I don't like to piece the border if I don't have to. For a 74" x 84" quilt I need more than 2 yds per side. Sure I have long strips but I can usually find other uses for the fabric.....

For my CW quilt, I cut 3-5 yd lengths to wash the fabric and then cut the 9" squares. That quilt used about 40 yards but I couldn't wash that much at one time.

​A lot of pattern call for WOF or width of fabric, so no cutting for me.

A lesson I learned a long time ago was to always try to preserve your length of fabric when cutting. That was a lesson learned when I started garment sewing and its just as valuable in quilting.

I agree with Lori. Once cut, you are stuck with that size you cut. Better to wait and cut as you need it.

Try ruler folding your yardage to make it easier to store and see on a regular bookcase. I just folded mine and love it. I keep fabric in bins and it made so much more room.

I also don't cut yardage until I need it.
