I think it's the same thing as Turkey Tracks, a quilting technique done in a "V" pattern. Here's a link to the drawing explaining how it's done. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-1753-1.htm
Hope that helps.  8-)

If you look on page one here there is a link to a chicken scratch site. It's not the same as turkey tracks.

Thank you, Yvonne, for correcting this!! I did find a site online called http://chicknscratchlive.com that you can check out. They say that it is an embroidery stitch. Have fun searching the site! The reference Yvonne makes on pg. 1 is a site for doing cross stitch. :D :D

What fun to read the responses--you can pretty much tell our ages by those "who did this year's ago" and those who never heardHof it. I never did it, but my sister did several items at 4-h projects back in the early 50's.

That is so pretty, I tried to do this last year but had a hard time finding cotton gingham, and decent patterns. I made a small pillow tho. Maybe I will try it again after seeing your quilt

Love your chicken scratch. I used to do pillows with chicken scratch, but have forgotten how now. I found a pillow that I did in pink gingham. I think I gave it to Goodwill.

Here is one of my favorite sites.

Oh, look. I've found another and it has a free pattern for the star as well as directions as to how to do chicken scratch.

Try using google and ask for "chicken scratch embroidery images". There are lots and lots of examples.

I made a little pillow when I was learning how to do this, it is so easy to do, looks harder than it is and it's something to do when you are watching TV.
