    Default Practice Quilt

just a small something i threw together this week so i could practice machine embroidery motifs and stippling.

no close-ups of this one, please, Mr. DeMille. i don't hate it, but the truth is that it looks waaaaaaaay better in the photo than it does in person. LOL LOL LOL

I think it looks really nice. Stand back and look - you maybe will see what the photo is showing - how nice it is.

That dot print in the sashing reminds me of the old fashioned reel films yet the quilt has a modern feel to it. did you fussy cut it to get the dots to line up on the sashing like that?

i like it a lot more than i expected to. i think it's fun and whimsical.
there are some technical errors, though, that don't show up in photos.
for now i'm saving it to use as a visual aid in some classes my friends and i will be giving at the local YMCA. i can use it to demonstrate some of the things that will happen if we don't pay attention and/or take the wrong sorts of short cuts during construction. then i'll fix it to demonstrate that we can often rescue projects that might seemed doomed to the landfill.

i used this motif (built into my embroidery machine) to practice centering on intersected seams. finding the center was easy enough. i will need to practice some more on getting them level, so motif points around the outside land where they're supposed to. these are close enough for a project like this, but i want to get better before i tackle anything really important. i just did small stippling in the gray block borders. it doesn't show up in a photo - not even a closeup. the thread color matches so well, it just "disappears".

this is the fabric i started with. i used it for a 4-patch stack & wack, then played around with the leftovers to make the sashing and border.
