According to Widipedia: "Treacle is any syrup made during the refining of sugar cane and is defined as "uncrystallized syrup produced in refining sugar". Treacle is used chiefly in cooking as a form of sweetener or condiment.

The most common forms of treacle are the pale syrup that is also known as golden syrup and the darker syrup that is usually referred to as dark treacle or black treacle. Dark treacle has a distinctively strong flavour, slightly bitter, and a richer colour than golden syrup, yet not as dark as molasses.

I believe in gingerbread you would use molasses, at least my mom did.

Treacle is common in the UK, not so much in the US. How about in Canada, anyone know?

Dark Karo syrup would work, but for ginger bread I like the flavor of molasses

Even at my age I'm still confused about molasses. To my mind, ever since I was a child, molasses in our house meant either Karo or Black Strap Molasses. Other folks seem to believe that there are lots others around, but don't see them much on grocery shelves. Karo is always there, some clear and some darker.

Treacle is darker and has a stronger flavour than Golden Syrup. I have often used Golden Syrup as a substitute and I don't see why Molasses wouldn't work (we don't see much Molasses on our grocery shelves here in Aus.).
