Thanks for the input everyone, I would take a broken one for sure, I'm a machinist so I shouldn't have any problem fixing it.

Can they be fixed? One of my 503s has one broken hinge. It works, but falls off when you remove the lid. It appears to be pot metal. It didn't occur to me that it could be fixed.

Luckily the other one is complete.

Bkay just google Singer 500 hinge fix and several hits pop up. It's been a topic many times over the years on many groups.

Shouldn't a neat tig welding work on aluminium, even on tiny hinges like that?
