You might remove the leaf then make a cover for the machine so you can leave it up.You can always put the leaf back on some day. The most the leaf might do leaned against the machine is self destruct with scratches. I doubt if it would hurt the machine. Maybe you could find a wooden box to fit over the machine and put the vase on top of the box. Pretty cabinet. Can you trade tables with your avatar machine?

Remove the leaf?? Interesting idea....
My avatar is in an even bigger cabinet (which I love). It's a desk type with drawers on the side. Plus it's blonde wood!! Kind of funky and retro but does not go at all with my dining room furniture!!
I'll think about removing the leaf...
It seems the general consensus is that it's not a good idea to open and close / raise and lower my machine on a daily basis.

The machine is from 1956. I haven't found the exact cabinet in the Sears catalogs from the time period. It's either that age or maybe a bit older. It's solid wood with interesting veneer designs. I think it would have been out of style by the 60's.
I don't want it to wear out...I like it so much!!

Ok, problem solved. We've moved the machine to the basement where my avatar and all my sewing supplies live anyway. It makes sense to have it there. The dining room really misses that beautiful cabinet though.
Thanks for all the advice.
