Default Buttonhole on a Kenmore

I have a model 16 Kenmore - think it was made in the early '70's. It came with lots of cams and a buttonhole maker. I just made my first test buttonhole which came out fine. But I am quite baffled.

I used white thread in the needle and red in the bobbin. The entire buttonhole is RED. Huh??? Every other machine I have would have given me a white buttonhole on top and red on the bottom. This one is red on top AND bottom.

Can anyone explain this to me?

I think I can; the bobbin thread is being dragged up and if you look very closely you will detect the white tread perhaps only as straight line in the middle of all the zigzags (no zigzag at all on the upper thread). It's cause by way to tight upper tension, or little to no bobbin tension, or a combianation. You can get similar problems if you have too thick thread for the needle eye too. Have you double and trippled checked threading, cleaned under the needle plate and bobbin case?

Everything is clean. I think you're right, the tension is too tight.

But isn't it amazing? That the darn thing looks so flipping good? I'll go see what happens if I loosen the tension.
