Steve I am goint to give away one of secrets here. Being that the pitman is wood, I don't use oil on the connections. I use powder graphite mixed with alcohol to make a paste and lub the connection with this. It will work great and will not darken the wood with sewing machine oil. Do this before you connect the pitman. I just coat the holes with it and then connect if you use the machine often once every six months is fine.
