Hi Caroline, I've never actually used a 101; since you've got one that's up and running--how is it to sew on? I'm curious what they're like to use.

thanks for your time,

Okay, I'm thinking twice about this 101. The slide plate that covers the bobbin is also missing. I looked on eBay and didn't see one of those. I wanted a heavy duty machine for sewing. I don't have a lot of vintage machines (3 FW, 27 treadle and an Elna) and would like to get a few more but I want them to work without too much struggle on my part. The seller also has a 99K. Both are reasonable in price but when I hear that you wouldn't take one for free??? red flags pop up all over the place. I'll see them on Tuesday so I'll keep watching for your comments. Thanks

It stitches like a dream, nice straight stitches i.e. like a 15-91 or a 201. When I got it back from the OSMG I test drove it on some denim layers. I finally broke a needle (my bad!) on 8 layers but I was using a regular needle not a denim needle. There is no reverse but the stitch regulator is right at the bottom of the pillar so I can turn it down to set a very fine locking stitch when piecing.

I just purchased a 1929 Singer 101 last Saturday. I love it! It is quiet, and has a great stitch. It does not have a reverse, but has a knob to control the length of stitches. My DH cleaned, oiled, and lubed her, but we did not have to rewire. He said the wiring did look pretty old (83 yrs.), so I imagine we will have to rewire sometime. I downloaded a manual for free from the Singer site.

I have 2 Singer 99's a 1924 and a 1928 99-13. I love sewing with them. They are so quiet. If the wiring looks good, try them out too. I'll bet that you can get a slide plate from sew-classic, or other places on the net. Let us know what you find out and what you get. Good luck!
