The only complaint I have with kerosene is the smell.

Alcohol works fine for removing dried oil and grease, but you've got to be darned sure you don't ever get any on the finish of a prized machine.
Dave I found that out too late. I got some alcohol on my machine by the upper tension and was about to have a heart attack. I spit on it really fast because that is all I had at the time. Then I got out the pledge (because it was closest) and wiped it off. I used diesel (my husband said it wasn't as good as kerosene but was close) and it cleaned that long silver bar underneath really well and actually didn't smell, which was surprising. I am going to town today and get some kerosene. I see no problem with using it if it works for you. After getting alcohol on my machine, I'll just use that for the little parts that can be taken off and cleaned away from the finish of the machine.
