I was happily sewing along when the little button stopped working and machine took off. Had to pull plug. I opened it up and don't know what I am looking at except that little metal piece was floating around inside. I think it goes on the part that controls the button, but, there isn't a screw in there to attach it.
Is this something I can fix myself or should I order a new one, and if so, from where and what? it is for my 401A.
Thanks in advance. You all always come through for me.

Alyce,
Looks like your missing a nut. It should go on the threaded shaft with the brass nut up against the carbon pile. The little brass piece goes on that shaft too.
Here is ArcaicArcane's blog about repairing a controller: { http://www.archaicarcane.com/what-a-pile-of/ }. Hope it helps. If not tomorrow I can take one of mine apart and take a pic or two of it.

There's a switch,.. usually I'm missing screws....
Oh,.. the pedal, you mean.
Technically, this article should work better:

Thank you Joe and Archaic Archane. Mr. Stitchnripper helped me (he had a clue and I didn't) and it seems to be working. A non critical piece of the bake a light broke off so it is being glued and drying right now. Will let it dry overnight and then see if the fix is real. If not, I'll be back here whining!!

in case you do have to replace it, you can probably get one at a local sewing machine repair shop, if you have one in your area. I had to replace my foot control to my 401A a couple of years ago, and went to the sewing machine shop that has been here for many years, and they had one to fit my machine. It is a generic, but that's what we have to settle for now, and it works just fine.
