That description fits an industrial needle feed machine. From what I know, it's actually easier on industrial needles because the needle is working in conjunction with the feed dogs, i.e. there is less backward pressure on the needle because it's moving with the material, then rises to form the next stitch. (I believe the needle begins to rise prior to reaching its furthest lateral position -- ??)

OK, just did a little research. Needle feed machines are 3 general types: parallel drive, upper pivot, center pivot. Parallel drive is just what the name implies, i.e. the needle enters the material at 90 degrees, drives (or helps to drive) the material perpendicular to a standard needle motion, then exits the material at 90 degrees at its furthest point of lateral (parallel) travel.

there are those here on the board that know far more than I do about the Davis feed mechanism and perhaps maybe they could be persuaded to (re)open a thread discussing it for folks that would be kind of cool

I was looking at this ad again and was wondering if that is the original Singer light hood in the pull down drawer - anyone know?

Oops! Rodney, you are right! A quick glance looked like that light might be incomplete, but it's actually the one I like better.
ETA: I wonder if they found the metal one too hot and wanted to change it out then found it was incompatible. I know I have tons of featherweight and other lightbulb tattoos.
Yeah. I guess I'm a slow learner.
