Handle holes in bentwood case

I would run a small piece of wood, maybe 6"x1" on the underside, glued in place with carpenter's wood glue (turn the lid upside down and put some weight on the new piece to hold it in place.
once that's dried in place fill the holes from the top with wood putty, sand them down when cured, stain the repair then drill new holes to attach the handle. The wood putty would have to be stainable and hard enough to drill.

i got a repaired case that someone with little care for authenticity did. Two sheets of iron were curved to match the arc of the case. One was placed inside, one out the outside. Drilled and screws and nuts attached it. Not pretty , But it is very strong.
