Cathy- Great Tip! on the needles. If I do pick one up at some point I'll keep it in mind. So far thru no skill of my own I've only bought machines that take 15x1 needles but I came close on one Free-Westinghouse.
That cabinet had some fantastic veneer on it. Very pretty. Sorry I talked you out of it. I'm here to enable, not be the voice of reason.
Hanging my head in shame...

i was thinking Bill Holman on Yahoo said that causes problems....changing needle bar height. But maybe that was in relation to also having to adjust timing. And I totally agree! No way would I want to grind needles!

I don't like godzilla - nobody anywhere near Indianapolis wants one either - believe me I've tried - it's the texture I think. The machines are nice well made machines though. There is even a Domestic here - light weight - godzilla. It still has some tags from when it was new. I think there are a couple Kenmore blender looking dinosaurs, too. Those have cut cords and nothing with them. Maybe I should let Wilbur at them with a screwdriver...

I'm pretty sure Bill was talking about the Singer 206 and 306. That is a whole 'nother subject. The 206x13 needle tip is really short, but the timing length is the same as the 15x1. So changing the needle-bar height doesn't work as it changes the timing (the hook will be at the eye and not above it, as it should be). In this case raising the needle-bar is not changing the timing. Since you are only raising it the amount of the needle length difference. It does work very well for this machine.
