The original question:
"Hi,
I'm french and i live in Montreal so excuse my english...
I have a Singer 319W since some month and i like this machine for my first time in sewing. I want to explore another way with it but i have some needle 206x13 (12 and 14) and i need 18 or other for hard fabric. And the 15x1 needle attack the stock bobbin case...
I read that exist some bobbin case, as the original 319W bobin case, but open and not closed like mine, some alternative bobbin case. But i don't have the reference of them, like Riccar or common industrial bobbin.
I ask for that because i don't have the tool to adapt/modified my case.
Thank you so much
Geraldine"
Geraldine, welcome. I can't speak for all of us here but I hardly ever stray from the vintage section. That's my strongest area of interest. I think most of the others here are about the same. Thanks for pointing this out Sharyn.
I know others have ground out part of the bobbin case to clear the 15x1 needles. I don't own one so I can't show you where to remove the metal.
The 206 class needles this machine uses are only available new in a couple sizes as you're already aware. You can try finding vintage needles in the sizes you want on Ebay. I know that's what some of the members here do.
I hope this helps,
Rodney

She'd be better off getting a 401 or a 500 or a similar machine than fighting with finding those stupid 206-13 needles.
I do know where the metal should be removed to alter a 319 to use 15x1 needles but that is something I haven't done, so I don't want to try to tell others how to do it.
The info is here on the forum, so anyone with a better search ability should be able to find it.

I spoke with one woman and she told me how much she loved her 319 (or one of them 300 series that uses 206x13 needle). She was in her 70's and bought the machine new at 16. Claims she reupholstered a sofa with it. Wanted to find enough 206x13 needles in the larger sizes to last the rest of her life. Not sure how many that would be.

12 and 14 size are still in production by Schmetz. I believe 16 and 18 size are discontinued. I've also seen 10 packs for sale at Sewclassic for $8. 100 can be had for $55 on Allbrands but only for 12 & 14 size on both sites.

I should have checked when I still had a pack of 206 needles here but I've modified the shanks of needles to get them to fit machines. For some reason, the DBx1 needles I have are all way too fat to seat in the German machines - even the ones I purposely ordered for it - so out came my trusty dremel. How much longer os a 15x1 than the 206? If it's not got a weird scarf too, perhaps the shank can be shortened a little?
