I appreciate the helpful answers to my other questions. Now I've run into another quandary. The spool pin on the bed of my Singer 403A for winding the bobbin is broken half off. It's very tight, I can't get it to twist with plyers to pull it out. It's probably the original pin.

I've read about drilling out the top two pins from below, but there's no access from below on the bobbin winding pin. Any ideas on how I might get it out?

Can you get to the underneath side of the spool pin through the bottom of the machine? It might have some sort of push washer that holds the spool pin in place. This you tube is showing how to replace the upper spool pins (where the spool of thread goes) but the bobbin spool pin may attach in a similar fashion. About 2 minutes into her video she shows how to get to the upper spool pins:

Here's what I found out from a blog. You will need to scroll down to a little past half the blog. He talks about the spool pin right after all the pictures of the parts of the machine. He drilled it out beginning with a 1/16" bit then the progresses to larger bits until the thing just falls apart. Hope this help you. I suppose if you can't manage to get it out you might have to take it to a repair shop.

osewme, Thanks. Yes, I found that blog post too. He seems to be talking about pins you can access from the other end. The pin in the bed of the 403A can only be gotten to from the top. So, if I drill it out I'm drilling toward the aluminum of the body of the SM and might hit it. I'm not sure that's a good idea!

If I don't hear any other suggestions I might give it a go...very carefully.

have you tried WD40? not familiar with your machine so have no other ideas, sorry

leaha, Thanks for the suggestion. I guess I'll try that though I don't know if there's any room for it to penetrate. Worth a try though!

Hey, I got it out! I sprayed WD-40 on it and let it soak overnight. Then I grabbed the spool pin with Vise-grips and used a thin piece of wood on the bed to pry against. It came out a smidge, then I repositioned the Vise-grips lower down on the pin and pried again, and so on.

Then I did the same on one of the upper spool pins (also broken) without using WD-40 and that worked too. Fyi.

Thanks. The spool pins on my 301 have been replaced by posts that look like springs. They are very unsightly. This sounds so simple I might try it.

bkay, the spool pins are original. It is one of the features mentioned in the manual as "Flexible Spool Pins - bend but do not break - thread unreels smoothly and easily." Also, I think that they unscrew.

Thanks, Janey. I never would have guessed. The black one has regular spool pins.
