Love my 301A. Have the zigzag attachment, but have never used it.

yup - just get one that does NOT say slant. That's the two styles, short shank (fits all short shank Singers) and the relatively newer Slant style. The short shank are more common, and until Singer made the 301 - that was the only way they came. So on older ones, it may not say "slant" or "straight" but you can always tell by looking at them.

To be clear - the 15 and 201 take the same unit.

There is one thing my wife saw about the ZZ attachments. The distance the actuating arm moves is critical to getting a complete pattern.
If we put the vertical shank ZZ attachment on my HOTHER, it will not do a complete ZZ pattern, t's way to narrow.
If we put the attachment on a Singer 15 the pattern will be the proper width. There is more vertical travel to the needle bar of the 15 than there is the HOTHER, so the attachment won't work properly on the HOTHER.
I have 4 ZZ attachments that take the cams; 3 LS, 1 SL. And two or three of the older ones that don't take the cams.
I've never been able to get them to work satisfactorily.

Whoa whoa wait just a darn minute. You mean I can make my 15-91 zig zag. No,way! That would be awesome, I love that machine and wished it could zig zag so I could do appliqué. Now I use my new home which does a great satin stitch but you have to lift the head to change bobbins which you do a lot switching colors and while I appreciate the weight lifting the 15-91 would be much easier. You have just made my night! I am off to try to find that magical attachment. Happy happy happy ....... Now oh wise ones where can you get decent metal bobbins that will wind well? I find many of them do not have a deep enough slot to engage and if you use a lot of colors... Me again with appliqué you need a lot of bobbins.

oreo1912,

Sew-Classic sells dandy bobbins. Here's a tip for those that don't have a deep enough slot. Go to Harbor Freight or a similar vendor and buy a set of small files. Then use one to deepen the slot on your new shiny bobbins.

Or buy the plastic ones S-C sells.

to be honest - I have not used any of these. I hope to some day when I've got time (like that ever happens LOL!).

I have so many zigzag machines to use. Even DH - when he wants to zigzag when using his 201 - he turns around and using the machine behind him - his Bernina 830 Record.

I've used a buttonholer and ZZ attachments on my 1891 shuttle machine, as well as all other Singers from then until the 201 (e.g. 66). My 15 doesn't work (at all) but if it did, I'd be confident it would also make a perfect zig-zag and buttonhole with these attachments too. The 15 is also listed in the manuals as being compatible (go on, have a look).

You've stated the reason I have so many machines. One is set up to FMQ, one has the walking foot, one has a 1/4" foot on it, one has a zig-zag. I love the old machines. The only thing I can't do with my vintage machines is embroidery.... can't find a vintage to do that. But that newer fancy machine, $$$$, is set up, too. Life is good.
