Default Just wondering

If women are seamstresses what are men called...seamsters? A tailor can be both. Is seamstress even politically correct anymore? Quilters can be both but they bring just quilts to mind. I never did like the word sewer because it looks like and usually pronounced SUE ER.

So what does everyone call themselves?

I call myself a seamstress and a quilter.

I tell folks that I sew (sometimes) and quilt.

I've heard and read the term "sewist" a lot since I've been on the various sewing forums.

How about this; we could call ourselves "stitch technicians"

It definitely is a misnomer to describe me as a seamstress. No way does it describe me in what I do. A stitcher might be a better descriptor.

I am a professional long arm quilter....and that's what I tell those who ask. This brings up lots of fun questions, good way to start a conversation!

Well here is some fun reading. Apparently this is or can be a hot debate. Read the replies under the meanings. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/seamstress

I am an incurable tinkerer and a novice stitch-maker.

I agree that sewer always looks and sounds like.... the plumbing sort.
