Yes, it is possible the belt is too tight. It needs to be just tight enough to not slip, no more. At that point it will seem to be way loose, but it's not.

The motor could also be dirty inside, or have been oiled too much.

Check the belt tension, then run the machine again.

beauford,

Does this machine have a V belt on it or a rubber band belt? Rubber band belts are bad for stretching then needing to be tightened. I've removed some that have burned, some that have left much deposits on the pulleys and some that have gummed up on the pulleys.
If your machine has a rubber band belt get rid of it and put a proper V belt on. It will make a heck of difference.

Also clean the hand wheel and motor pulley grove to remove any old belt residue. That will help prevent slipping.

Getting off the subject here, J Miller, but it is great to see you back visiting/helping us. I have been in Texas teaching a bunch of Gen Xers to sew and quilt, today is only my second day back reading and catching up on what's going on in the quilting world....

JoAnn,

Thanks. I'm just beginning to feel good enough to want to do things with my machines. Just got a box of goodies from MacyBaby and I'm itching to try some of them out.

Glad to be of help when I can.
