Thank you all for your replies. The lady sounded like she would just give me the machine free of charge...but we'll see. It may hold sentimental value to her, which I can understand.

It might be a Singer 99, which is a 3/4 size machine and also extremely cute.

Whatever it is, if it's a Singer from the 50's it's going to be a great machine. Please come back when you get it and tell us all about it!
