I broadened my local search a bit a found a Singer 457. It's not a portable model (at least, not at the moment). Can it be converted to go in a carry case without a lot of trouble? How would this machine stack up against some of the others mentioned in this thread and/or against the 237 (I've read that the 237 and 457 seem very similar?)?

Welcome ember1205. That 457 does look similar to the 237. I did a little research and found a thread here that is rather old, but it looks to have some good info Singer Stylist 457 Instruction Book-free??? The link to the manual in that thread no longer works, but it can be found at https://www.singer.com/search/support?title=457

Something that I noticed in that thread was that it does have plastic gears and a belt or two on the bottom. I also noticed that it takes Apollo bobbins. I am not sure, but it may be the plastic class 66. However the dimensions are slightly different than the metal class 66 bobbins per http://www.singersewinginfo.co.uk/bobbins/

Good luck in your search.

Thanks.

I found a thread about the 457 as well indicating that one of the gears is apparently "more likely" to break / strip, but once replaced it should hold up well for quite some time?

I would prefer to find something with all metal mechanicals, but this 457 is at least fairly local.

My biggest issue with any machine right now seems to be that everyone thinks they're worth their weight in gold... I had a seller on eBay try and sell me a non-working 237 for $100 and someone with a working one seems to think it's worth $140 before adding in about $60 in shipping.

You don't say where you are, but there is a 237 for sale on Dallas Craig list.

I am located in New England.

Believe it or not, though, I actually did see that machine in my searches and ruled it out because it seems to be that it's being sold by someone that "flips" them. Too high of a price, or I would consider reaching out to discuss the potential to have it shipped.
