Thanks sunlitensmiles... I AM missing the one right above the needle clamp where your green ribbon is. And thanks to jljack ,who said her machine stitches fine without that guide ( I think it is #11)

More on missing thread guide - I found this comment:
When using a walking foot or FM foot, you may find that the last thread guide just above the needle interferes with the arm of the foot that fits over the needle clamp. If this is the case, you can remove that last guide temporarily (don’t loose it or the screw) simply by unscrewing the fastener that holds it in place
I THINK this must be what I'm missing - does anyone know if you can buy this part and the screw? Thanks for the comments ... and yes, it's hard to stop at one!

I buy my accessories from april1930sshop.com, but Jenny at sew-classic.com might be a better source for parts. April will answer any questions by email or phone. She may have the part as she and her husband have a repair and sales business, specializing in featherweights and 301s. April ships free, too.

Welcome to the 301 Club and enjoy your machine. They are easy to maintain and sew beautifully. I found a used cabinet and had a carpenter make it work to hold the machine and also able to put it away. So nice to sew in a cabinet in case you can't find a card table for it.

I am so excited... I finally got brave and gave her some oil, no lube though, and she's running nice now! I have some hand me down homes puns that I was going to try a turning twenty quilt on... It may be my first quilt on this machine!
Now my question is, it looks like there's some built up grease/oil on the presser foot and the needle clamp area... What's the best way to clean it?
and another dumb question - I guess there is no on-off switch for the machine... There's a switch for the light... But once you plug the machine it, it's ready to go?
