Hi, I posted about a similar machine on the thread mentioned above. I also found others that are akin to the White 231 within the post and numbered them.

My post is 316. However, the entire thread is fascinating and a great read. Always something to learn.

Caroline,

I just stumbled across this thread (Janey found it first!) She knows more about it, but this is one of my favorite machines in our collection. Like Cari, I was fascinated by the "following bobbin" movement while zig-zagging. Our machine seems very solid and well made. Many of the designs in the machine make me mindful of a Brother, but just an impression based on similarities in the mechanics. I really like the color, too. A beautiful machine!

Thank you for collecting the other similar machines in your post http://www.quiltingboard.com/vintage...ml#post7416088 I know I had seen most of them when I was researching the machine badged "Miracle" with JA-16 and JC-2 on the underside.

Janey - Neat people never make the exciting discoveries I do.

I think I have the same machine. I bought because it looks just like the White my mother bought new in the early 50s. I was disappointed to find mine is a dedicated left needle which I think would make quilting more difficult.

Quilting would be fine, it's just harder to piece the quilt. I quilted a baby quilt with my Underwood left needle machine with no issues at all, but I pieced the quilt on another machine. I wasn't going to fight the machine trying to get that elusive scant 1/4" seam.
