Cathy,

I don't have a "Q" box, but I'll check my owners manuals and see if I can find what it's for.

Cathy I believe the Q foot is for quilting, as it is a clear plastic foot. that is what I've used it for. Very nice machine too.

The Q Set is for knits....I'm thinking Q stood for Qiana, a silky, slinky knit that was popular in the 70s. It was supposed to prevent skipped stitches...it didn't! The foot is flat on the bottom & the needles are ballpoint. Unless you REALLY want it, don't waste your money. That Kenmore will sew knits perfectly with a stretch needle (not a ballpoint) for seams & a stretch double needle for hemming....I know mine does.

Also, I don't think the Q Set actually came with any of the Kenmores (BUT I could be wrong!)....it was an optional accessory. So you don't really need it to complete your original accessories. I remember buying mine in a Sears store in the mid 70s when I was sewing a lot of knits.

On Sears Parts Direct, the needles are still available but now they are just called Blue needles. The feet are no longer made but they are on ebay pretty frequently.

Suzy, if it works for quilting...go for it! But, that wasn't it's original purpose. It just might work there better than it did on knits!

I've seen many boxed sets that have the Q in there. I've also seen many boxes of just needles with the Q, so being a type of needle/foot for sewing knits makes sense.

But I'm an attachment junky - so knowing there is one I don't have is enough reason to get one! Though I may already have the foot, just not the pretty box it came in.

Maybe the "Q" stands for "Quality".....?

That's similar to the machine I learned to sew on...I loved those cams and played with all of them.

My 158 Kenmore has a Q foot set. The book states for optimum sewing of stretch fabric or stretch stitches us a Q foot and needle. I think the needle may be a ballpoint. Hope this helps. I love my old 158 until she decides to lose a belt. She sews a nice seam and has had many hours of use. Ethel
