I found this at an estate sale in Odessa (the town about 20 miles away) weekend before last. I've been playing with it all week! This is the best sewing machine I've ever used!!! 8-)

It needs a new rubber 'thingie' for the bobbin winder

This nob is also missing. How important is it? The instruction book said that it was for fine tuning stitch length but I've had no trouble so far.

Beautiful machine. Don't you just love playing with all of the fancy stitches. The stitch lengh is just missing it's end cap so it won't effect anything.

Very nice and blonde cabinet too!

Mine is in dark wood and just had it serviced last week for $85.00 and repair to the bobbin winder; haven't had the chance yet to put her back in her sewing cabinet.

Congratulations! I have been happily sewing on my 401A for the past 50 years. I bought it after I graduated from high school, paid over $250.00 for it back then. It is a great machine.

Congratulations! I have one just like it and I absolutely love it. I use it to stitch around all my fusible applique. It does a smoother and better stitch than my new machines.

That's great and a great price! Did you get the table with it? If you did, that's an even better price! Yea!

My mom had that one. I learned to sew on it. :)

The little tire-thingie on her bobbin winder had disintegrated, too. She wrapped a rubber band around the spoke and it worked fine (had to press it up against the flywheel to wind the bobbin, but whatever). Oh, and I don't think you need the gripper knob on the stitch-length lever. If I remember correctly it was just a plastic cover. Yours probably got brittle with age and fell off at some point. It's just aesthetic.

Someday I'll find my own 401...

Thanks for the info! I've been using the bobbin winder from one of my other machines. I think that I'll try that rubber band idea ! I'm so glad that the stitch regulator isn't missing anything.
Keep looking you'll find one. I looked for about 6-9 months!

Congreats! Glad it works so well. I am sure you will be able to find those two pieces you need, bobbin wheel and the knob. If all else fails, pm lostn51, Billy probably has it.

This is so funny 'cause I'm going to replace my 5 y/o singer with this one.
