I am one of those who has sewn over straight pins all my sewing life. I have also endured the screeches of those who say not to. I do not recall ever breaking a needle on a pin. I have seen a lot of people break needles by pulling the fabric and deflecting the needle. Been sewing over 64 years.

It's kind of a no-no for any machine with a plastic bobbin case, though I still do it. What I won't do is use a titanium needle. They don't just break, they shatter and can really cause some damage when they do.

I sewed over a pin with my singer 27 today and the pin lost

Yes! I love those pins with the white heads. Flower pins are my next favorite. They're not as thick as quilting pins.

I try to never sew over a pin, but it does happen. It's dangerous with my Elna. That little machine will shear a pin in half and send one piece flying. Swiss precision? My 301 just glances off the pin.
