Jim,

Thanks for understanding about wrong statement. My age is really starting to show. Probably because life has really gotten in the way this past year.

Here's my quote from post #22: CC is also known as a Free Rotary, 1221, 40F1, or 38Y1. It is a short, flat shank needle with a timing length (top to eye) of 32.1mm. Yes, the timing length is shorter than a 15x1.

The Eldridge Flat Shank needle is aka a 20x1, BB, 50N1. These have a longer tip than the DD needles. The timing length is 38.2mm.

Now,... what are the dimensions for a KK 1221? I'm thinking shorter than a 15x1...

and what threw me for a bit, is I bought needles, new unopened pkgs, mfr'd by Free of BB and DD's. The DD lists on the package rotaries, and for some reason, I was thinking it included Free's own machines. I'm clearer now. Thanks

Love the artwork on the old needle packets. Would make for an interesting collection.

my packages for Eldredge (National) is like the one on the left, but says (3) and N. S. I'm not sure what N.S. or F.S. stands for. They are NOS, and I'm going to resist using them.

NS---New Style
FS---Flat Shank

In the beginning of the Ismacs needle list all the abbreviations are given.

I haven't had the pleasure of hunting down obsolete needles for any of my machines. In post 33 above one needle tip is longer than the other but the rest looks the same. Would the shorter tip needle work in machines calling for the needle with the longer tip?

I'm going to throw caution to the wind and say yes. Problem is, short tip needles are harder to find, in my experience.

I'm also thinkin maybe I could grind the shank shorter on 15*1's and perhaps approximate CC's and maybe the KK if i can find the specs.

The shorter tip is needed by the Rotary machines. The VS machines call for the longer tip, but will work well with either one.

Boye sold five different needles that are considered "20x1", #4,#12, #14, #21, & #24.

#4-New Home
#12-White
#14-National
#21-Eldredge Rotary
#24-New Royal OS, Royal St John

I don't think the vibrating shuttle machines would be very fussy. Tip length might come into play with the Rotaries.
Here are the exact dimensions if needed:
