Hi - I'm new to the board. I joined entirely because of this one 3 year old thread! I just got a Bell 429 at a flea market ($35) and I'm dying to use it, but smoke blows out of the motor when I run it so I think I'd better replace the motor before getting down to work. The motor on it is a Bell Model 24 1.2 Amp motor (25-75 cycles). I cannot find an original replacement motor and I can't find anything age appropriate at 1.2 Amps. Anyone know whether it matters if I use 1.2 Amp or just go with a standard 1.0 Amp Singer style motor? Also, Sheluma and Cecilia, I don't suppose either of you has posted the manual for the Bell/Phoenix 429 anywhere? Finally, my machine came with only one basic foot and one old needle. Have you figured out what comparable machine's parts to hunt down on ebay to ensure proper fit? Any advice or info would be much appreciated.

Hi MaxoMoxx, I've been away from this board for a long time and just now saw your post. I, too, originally joined for this thread! But, alas, I did not buy the Bell sewing machine. I'd love to see a picture of yours. Did you find anything about needles and feet? I'm sure you've figured it all out by now, but if not, there are some good resources on the web for needle types and sizes. And it may be possible to rehab your motor. there's some good info in this blog:

Hello Miriam! I'm going to check out the Victorian sweat shop.

On Victorian sweat shop there are people from other countries where Phoenix machines are common.
Mine uses standard needles but I don't know anything about your model. On mine you HAVE to have the bobbin threaded just so - don't miss that little hole on the top.
