What about a 401? I went in to look at the hand wheel and motor boss configuration and Oh Wow!! There's no motor there, it must be internal, how could I have missed that??? I seriously cleaned it, oiled it, and all that jazz- it was even so jammed I thought there might be something lost inside it and ***I didn't even notice it had an internal motor***!!! I would have put that in all caps, but it is not allowed. But I did actually shout out oh wow. DH is used to these sorts of things, so he didn't even lift an eye brow. Staid engineer there.

The motor on the 401 is internal. Rather than hijack this thread, you can search (upper right) Singer 401 and a lot of good info will come up.

Unfortunately, the search here on QB has been having some problems since November. When you click on a link it doesn't show the actual text of the posts. The work-around is to refresh the page either with the "refresh icon" or F5. I have also gone "back" to the search and then clicking on the link again.
