I wonder if it looks like http://needlebar.org/cm/displayimage..._display_media I think yours is a little older than this one.
In addition to the paper work, did you get the attachments and needles? I'm not sure, but I think that it might take a different system needle that may be difficult to find. I think I've read that one can grind off some of the shank to match the image that I believe may be shown on the bed of the machine. Janey - Neat people never make the exciting discoveries I do. |

The Elgin Sewing Machine & Bicycle Co. and Seuberth-Leach Manufacturing were based along Dickie Avenue, Elgin, IL according to an old article in the Chicago Tribune. Of course, that may be just one factory. They made Safety bikes starting at about $40. Twice the price of many sewing machines then. LIke sewing machines, the name came back to life later after the war and Sears used the name for a while. Elgin watches came from the same folk later on, too. I would love to have a pre 1900 Elgin bike and sewing machine to display together. I am much more likely to find a VSM though. They didn't have wooden wheels. |
"Elgin" ended up being a badge name for Free - I've got one that is a New Royal (very different design, but made by Free) and a much newer one that is a Free design - looks like the picture linked above

However, there appears a 1936 receipt from "Elgin Sewing Machine and Bicycle Company." I can't seem to find much information but there seems to be a gap of 37 years. Janey - Neat people never make the exciting discoveries I do. |
I realize this post is a couple years old, but here is some info on the Elgin company. In a nutshell, the original Elgin machines were produced between 1896-1898; after that, the company closed down and the Elgin name was put on machines made by other companies. I just acquired one today, and across the top is “The Elgin Sewing Machine Co., Rockford, Ills. U.S.A.” This leads me to believe that mine was made by the original Elgin.

There were several companies that used Elgin. According to needlebar.org lots of makers used the Elgin name including one from Germany, It also says New Home used "Elgin" but doesn't list it in the badged names for New Home.
