Guess what I just found in a packing box!?! An old Singer in a bentwood case! It belonged to someone in my husband's family. I contacted Singer and they tell me it is a 99 and was manufactured in New Jersey on Feb1, 1928.
I haven't plugged it in yet (a bit scared to before I have her checked out) but the parts move smoothly by hand. There is a knee control attachment as well.

A TREASURE!

Anyone here use a vintage machine routinely?

sharon b 12-14-2010 05:25 PM

Many do - and we have a special section for vintage machines - be sure and check it out

earthwalker 12-14-2010 05:34 PM

Yes, I use a 1950's Pinnock daily and will be using a 1912 treadle (after I restore it in the new year). At the moment my Pinnock is sitting on top of the treadle cabinet so I 'spose I'm actually using them both! My 80's singer has been sidelined (I have no great affection for it), but will probably hang on to it as a backup.

Sounds like you have a great machine...(we love pics....hint....hint).

san-sing 12-14-2010 06:56 PM

I have several vintage singers I use daily. I have been piecing a selvage quilt top on phone book paper on my treadle. I love to treadle, they make such a pretty stitch. It was made in 1924, it belonged to my great aunt.

I use my Singer 15-91 daily! I love her!

Stitchnripper 12-14-2010 07:22 PM

I have three vintage - a class 15 treadle, 66 in a cabinet, with knee control, and a featherweight. All treasures which I use.

pinecone 12-14-2010 07:36 PM

I'm sure you will have fun with it. My neighbor gifted me a Singer 99 in cabinet that was her Mom's. It humms right along.

CarrieAnne 12-14-2010 08:20 PM

Great find!

Annaleehunter 12-14-2010 08:23 PM

My favorite, only, mil gave me her FW 221. I prefer it over my super, duper Bernina that my sister gave me! In fact, I want to work my way backwards and find a working treadle! There is just something about the way a vintage machine just works!

irishrose 12-14-2010 08:32 PM

The site is 'Vintage Sewing Machine Shop' The first post was by lostn51. Put the above phrase in the search box and watch for lostn51 as the poster. Lostin51 (Billy) is a storehouse of information on the older ladies Sewing machines), as is a poster by the name of Charlee. Nearly 500 pages of interesting reading.

Charlee 12-14-2010 08:41 PM

Everyday! I have a featherweight, a 201-2, Singer 9W (treadle) Wheeler and Wilson #8 (treadle), Singer 66-1, Singer 99, a vintage Kenmore....love my old machines!! :)

sueisallaboutquilts 12-14-2010 09:26 PM

Oh yes!! I use my Featherweight, 66, 201, 301 and I also have a jazzy Bernina that I love! But I adore my old Singers :D
I really want a treadle and hope to get one someday!

vintagemotif 12-14-2010 10:28 PM

Yes, I use my vintage machines almost every day. I sew on a Singer 201-3 treadle, Singer 15-90 treadle, and a National Two Spools treadle. I own other vintage machines that I have used, but the ones I mentioned are my all time favorites for sewing.

SEW 12-15-2010 03:26 AM

I have a Singer Featherweight that was a gift from my Mom. I love everything about it!

Surfergirl 12-15-2010 05:03 AM

I use my vintage machines daily. I have 2 featherweight 221's (getting a third one on Friday), a 66, 101, three 201-2's, 15-91, two 99's, 192 spartan, 301, 401, 404, a couple of newer models. Looking to add a 500 Singer Rocketeer to the collectiion. Love them all!

Jackie D 12-15-2010 06:01 AM

I bought a hand crank made in Germany that has a shuttle at a yard sale for 40 dollars last spring. It works beautifully.

Farmer's Daughter 12-15-2010 06:20 AM

I have a Featherweight that I purchased new in 1956. It still runs as good as the day I brought it home. It was made in 1955.

k9dancer 12-15-2010 06:33 AM

I have several vintage machines, and I use a couple of old Featherweights regularly. I think everyone should have a mechanical, as opposed to computerized, machine as a backup for when that fancy computer goes out. These days, I use the old machines as my main machines.

katlady 12-15-2010 07:11 AM

All the time they make beautiful stitches. All metal machines, they will never will wear out.

JanG 12-15-2010 07:14 AM

I use one of my Singer 301's daily. One I've had since my marriage in 1955. I sewed all my chilren's clothes (4) and since 1973 have pieced quilts with it. I have 3 of them because of being a snowbird and would give up my dishwasher before I'd give any of my 301's up!! All in all I probably have 25 vintage Singers but always go back to the 301.

fabricesta 12-15-2010 10:57 AM

Where is this This section for vintage machines

gramquilter2 12-15-2010 11:59 AM

put Vintage Machines Shop..Come in and set a spell
in the search menu and it should find the site for you

I too use my 2 Featherweights everyday more often than
I do my more expensive new machines. Happy sewing wth
yours.

ree-nee 12-15-2010 02:11 PM

I have the same machine and mine runs like a top, although in sounds somewhat like an old model "T" when I sew with it.

Shemjo 12-15-2010 03:26 PM

I sew with my older FW and have some other older "regular" non-computerized machines, including a treadle.

Ardis 12-15-2010 03:28 PM

I also have an old Singer in a bentwood case also, my MIL gave it to me. it was what she called her heavy duty machine, I haven't used it yet, but plan to try it out, when I attempt a blue jean quilt as you go quilt, one of these days. I've been collecting jeans for years. I also have an old Singer treadle that I bought in 1964 at a Salvation Army store for an ad re: antiques. I used it some, way back then, but haven't used it in years and it needs new belts and I don't know what else, I'd love to get it repaired, and give it a try.

Actually, what I sew on regularly is a 1964 Kenmore (all metal machine) Is that considered vintage, yet? It's a great machine.

lawsonmugs 12-15-2010 04:37 PM

I got a treadle a few weeeks ago and lostn51 told me it was a New Home model A made in 1882 it's in very rough shape and the poor baby needs lots of help but I only paid $15 on creigs list. I have found a manual and a few parts and a book on how to clean her up. It will be a slow process but I can hardly wait to hear her hummmmm. happy holidays Mary

Angel 12-15-2010 04:39 PM

Yes, I have a Singer Featherweight 221 & it is beautiful! Runs very smoothly, I use it for classes & workshops IF I only have to sew straight because of course it doesn't do anything but straight stitch. Hummmms right along though! Imagine that & it's 60 yrs. old!!!!

This is actually the machine I learned to sew on it was built in 1904. Our house burned when I was learning to sew and the lady that owned this gave it to me, because we no longer had a sewing machine.

annieshane 12-15-2010 05:01 PM

I received a hand turned Singer (built 1925) for early Christmas present. It sews like a dream. My husband can't understand why I would want one that you have to turn by hand. How can you explain that? I just know that beauty was sitting beside the road at a sewing machine dealer's repair shop. Naturally, my son and I did a turn-around and turned in. Rest is history...I refused to buy it (being practical some times). He decided he and his brother are buying for me for Christmas (poor younger son and DIL found out after the fact). I admit I cried. Such a splurge...but my DIL is also very happy. She doesn't sew, but will be getting this one day because she loves antiques. Now, we are all happy! Then I found a FW on this board for a remarkable $200 including shipping. I am truly a blessed quilter this year...and machine rich.

Merry Christmas

lawsonmugs 12-15-2010 05:05 PM

how beautiful she is. Looks like a angel. Mary

fabricesta 12-15-2010 05:07 PM

Thanks I think so too. Sew beautifully just need to get a new belt.

lawsonmugs 12-15-2010 05:09 PM

This thread is like being in a toy store as a kid at christmas. Mary

That is a nice machine and a gorgeous cabinet.

katcincinnati 12-15-2010 06:06 PM

I sew on White 77MG made in 1950. I LOVE it.

jojosnana 12-15-2010 07:07 PM

I don't have a real vintage but I do have my first singer which is yellow with age but still zips along.......of course it didn't have the nice stitches so now she has a sister Singer.

tlpa 12-15-2010 07:11 PM

I have a 15-91 someone gave me and it doesn't have a bobbin case. Do you know where I can find one?
