Time for another German machine - Frister and Rossmann transverse shuttle from 1937. The date is actually stamped on the underneath of the cover. Believe me, this machine weighs a ton, it's an absolute monster if you see it side by side with the Vesta. It's bliss to use, and of all my machines it winds the tightest most even bobbin. As for the porcelain handle, it keeps your hand nice and cool while you're sewing.
Note the seam guide in place |
On the Singer 185j, where is the serial number? I have tried locating it on mine and I just can't seem to located it. I have quite a sewing machine collection too. I love sewing machines. I started out with a singer treadle that was my mother in-law's godmother's. It need some refinishing to the cabinet. It all went down hill (according to my husband) from there. I have portables and machines in cabinets. I display them all over the house. Well, some of them anyway, others are in a shed waiting to be refinished and the machines cleaned and oiled.

Muv that machine is drop-dead gorgeous!!! You are so lucky t have that beauty.

Oh wow! This is the best thread ever. I love looking at everyone's beauties. Can't wait to see more.

This is my only treadle. It is a Singer 9w 1905-1910 I bought it this month for $30 from a neighbor, it belonged to her grandmother. I am in the process of cleaning it up and trying to put a new belt on it.

I spent hours one night studying all your machine pictures that you posted on your site. Your site is great! Very helpful to use in identifying machines and then go from there to locate more info. Okay, I'm a vintage sewing machine geek. A link to your site for those that have never discovered it: http://thayerrags.com/sewing.htm Thanks again! :) |
Earthwalker, I am sure we used the Pinnock machine when I was at Oakbank Area School (Sth Aust) in late fifties, and your treadle looks very like the one my grandad gave me, (which also needs some t.l.c.). Its mega cold here in Adelaide hills today.

Lets keep the conversations to the main VSMS thread and keep the photos flowing!

Is the golden in the picture the one in you Avatar? Beautiful dog. My golden always is by my side like that when I am sewing too. I call her my Sewing Supervisor.

I will post my ladies! Always happy to... even if some still need some work!

Here are my vintage machines. The treadle was purchased at an auction a few years ago. The "Little Beauty" was my aunt's toy machine. She would have played with it in the 1920's. The Little Beauty was made in Germany

Awesome thread! I have a Damascus Grand treadle (Montgomery Ward), a Singer golden Touch 'N' Sew (inherited from my mom), and a Singer toy machine (electric). Don't have the details handy at the moment, but will have when I get pics taken and posted. Thanks for this thread, Billy!

My first machine is a National Sewing Machine Company Vibrating Shuttle treadle. The "Damascus" name was manufactured for Montgomery Ward. The serial number is 3209025. I don't know exactly in which year it was made. There is no list for NSMCo machines like there is for Singer. I'm guessing in the 1920s.
My second machine is a Singer 128K Hand Crank, manufactured in Scotland on Feb 2, 1927, serial number Y4467698. My third machine is a Singer 221 Featherweight, manufactured in Elizabeth, NJ on January 24, 1940, serial number AF741157. Beautiful machines. I have never heard of a vibrating shuttle. Love the cabinet for the treadle. :) |

Two of my oldest Singer sewing machines:
"Nettie" is a treadle (G529567) She was born around 1910. A Russian immigrant bought her when she came to this country around 1920. Nettie has been in the family ever since helping the seamtresses earn a living for 4 generations. The last owner was placed in a nursing home 1 year ago and Nettie was set aside. I found her and bought her back to life. She has a lot of battle scars, but I love them all. I love sewing on her. "Little Ginie" is a model 99 (AM 486827). I call her Ginie because she is the best invention since the cotton gin. What a hard little worker she is. And she is small enough to carry to class. Here is another machine we have in our collection. An 1852 Grover and Baker treadle machine. It has not been cleaned up and has been in storage for about 3 years. About two months ago we were emptying two storage units that my DH got when he brought all his things from North Carolina. We were down there yesterday and I discovered this "JEWEL" of a sewing machine. It needs to be cleaned up and worked on a little but the beautiful Walnut Cabinet doesn't have a thing wrong with it. With the coffin lid on top I think it will be gorgeous. My DH reconditions and restores vintage and antique sewing machines and I can't wait till he works on this one. The mechanism of the machine works freely. What a fabulous machine and it is almost 160 years old. What stories it could tell. As it was pre Civil War, did this machine sew uniforms for the Confederacy or how many quilts did it make? It is a two thread chain stitch machine. I am soooooo excited. According to the Encyclopedia of American Sewing Machines between 31 to 200 of these machines still exist and its value would be between $200 to $1,200 but to me it is priceless.

This is a Serata treadle manufactured in 1913 by Stoewer in Stettin, Northern Germany (now Szczecin, Poland). You can find a history of the company on www.stoewer-museum.de . I only got this machine last month but I've already nearly finished a quilt top on it.
