Default Red wool stuck in Singer 185

I just picked up a Singer 185, in beautiful condition but it had a red wool like fabric stuck in the bobbin area. It was stuck in a spring to the right of the arm that pops out the bobbin. It is so stuck in there that I wonder if it is suppose to be there? Anyone out there have knowledge of this?

My old treadle has a little wick for oil to lubrucate the shuttle.

Good thing you asked before you removed it. You'll find the felt piece on several Singer models: 66, 99 and 185. It's a wick to hold oil that lubricates the bobbin case. The manual will tell you the spots that need oiling. If you don't have a manual there's a free download on the Singer site.

I almost did the same thing with the first old 66 I found. Boy, was I glad that I realized in time that it belonged there and why.

Yes it is supposed to be there. It's part of the lubricating system. TFSR { http://www.tfsr.org/publications/tec...machine_manual } has detailed information on it in their manual.

Be glad it is still there. Moths sometimes ate the wool "wick" that lubricates the shuttle. Just add oil and smile.

I pulled out about half of one before I realized it was probably supposed to be there!

Margaret,

Go up to my first post and click on the link. They give detailed instructions in there on how to make a new one.
