To change direction slightly, ISMACS says the 101s use the 15x1 needle. That's great.

And it looks like it uses the Class 66 bobbin like the 201, am I right about that?

Esther,
PM on the way.

Rodney,
Thanks for the confirmation on the bobbins. Now I'm set for that.

Here's the pictures I promised. My sincere apologies for how messy the LR is. I'm in the middle of a quilt project and have stuff scattered everywhere.

Slightly different version of the cabinet. It has the medallions on the legs but no side drawers and no brackets at the top of the legs.

Mine was allocated in 1926 and has a toggle instead of the pull chain switch.

No extra box on mine.

Trying to show the switch.

Junction for the power cord.

The knee controller on mine is always down. There's no provision for it to fold up out of the way like on more modern machines.
I hope these help.

I think mine would be a portable then? Or am I missing something. Here's a pic of the bottom with the wiring:

Thats the first time I've seen the bottom of a 101. It's so nice that the bottom is covered.

i also heard that this is the first singer model that uses the potted motor and heard also that it's not the best one.

Here’s a look at a different base on a Singer 101 for comparison. Although this machine wasn’t in a cabinet nor a case when I got it, it shows a different base without the control compartment built-in. I wonder if it was simply a progression away from the head-mounted control system? I would guess that this one could have been in either a cabinet or a case and powered by a Universal Block as many others were.

CD in Oklahoma

ETA: Rodney beat me to it, and shows more of his machine.

Rodney,

Wow, they say a picture is worth a thousand works, your's just wrote a novel. Now I know how the wires on mine were originally set up. Makes me really not want to alter them.

They're not the best pics. If you need more/different details just ask. I'll do my best. My wires aren't completely original but it's been so long since I redid the cabinet (25 yrs give or take) I don't remember if I did the repairs or if it came that way. This was my first and only sewing machine until I gave it to my daughter last fall.

I can't think of any practical reasons not to hook up a modern controller if you want.
Singerco.com does have a free download for the manual and it gives greasing instructions there.

Rodney,

I'll have to check my files, I "think" I have a manual for the 101. If not I'll pay a visit to Singer.
