Mike,

Only the dash-2s had a built-in light in the front. The other 201s had some other type of light mounted on the arm.

Here’s my Singer 201K4 HC and my Centennial Singer 201-2 (potted motor, and still in rehab).

201s I've found easy to recognise, but for certainty nothing beats looking up the serial number
There were a lot of neat things about the early 15s that don't apply to the newer ones. I almost got my hands on one last month, a fiddlebed, but that went sideways somehow. I agree, the serial number is a great one. I think I've ever only had one that was wrong, and I don't remember the circumstances.

The 201-2 is also the 201 with the potted motor, perhaps that's why the light is in the front?
The 201-3 became the 201K from what I understand. (My 201-3 lists as a 201K in the ISMACS SN DB)

Wow! I didn't know they existed with a fiddlebed. That would be very cool to have in a collection, and must be pretty rare.
