Default Singer 237

I was just contemplating buying a 237, which, in the photo appears to be in fairly rough shape. I did some research, and it came in a version that had a lever or a knob to lower the feed dogs. I don't think this one has it that feature. Where is that knob/lever located on the machine?

Another question - why doesn't the machine fit the hole in the cabinet?

Because it's in what looks like a Kenmore cabinet. See how sharp the corners of the cabinet are? How the machine corners are rounded? The machine that fits this cabinet would have the sharp corners and have a large enough bed to fill the cabinet cut out. The Singer doesn't have that large of a bed because it's a machine that can be put into a treadle cabinet. The bed is shorter at the right side of the machine in order for the treadle belt to clear the bed.

Thanks Cari. I appreciate your help. I found a photo of a Kenmore machine, so see how it would fit perfectly.

Found the drop feed dog knob info online.

I am fond of this model Singer. In fact, I have acquired five of them (four were keepers) - one is at my daughter's, one at my granddaughter's, one in Florida, and one is at my home in Florida.

The fifth one supposedly "worked" - but one of the setting handles was broken (a screw driver worked - but was inconvenient) and the needle position was off to the right. I gave that one away.

Two of them needed to have the bobbin winder "tire" replaced, but that is a minor thing.

It is a very straight-forward machine and relatively "idiot-proof."

I have the Singer 237 that has a knob that drops the feed dogs. My machine is treadle powered.
